Gemini Live Hands-Free Gmail & Daily Brief: Singapore Guide

Gemini Live just learned to do things for you

Google upgraded Gemini Live on 26 Aug 2026, and it is the kind of update that quietly changes how you use the app. Gemini is Google's AI assistant, a free app you can chat with on your phone. Gemini Live is its voice mode: instead of typing, you talk. Until now it mostly answered questions. The new version can act too: check your email out loud, read your day back to you, and finish small tasks while your hands are busy.

The timing matters. Google says the Gemini app passed one billion monthly users in August, with 63 per cent of them now talking to it out loud. In Singapore, where the morning rush does not leave much time to sit and sort email, that is worth a look. And because Gemini is Google's own product, it is one of the few assistants that can actually reach into your Gmail and Google Calendar. It sits in our AI tools directory alongside the other big assistants.

What the Gemini Live update adds

Four things changed, and they build on one another:

  • Personal Intelligence. Gemini remembers your past chats and can pull context from the Google apps you connect: Gmail, Calendar, Photos and YouTube. Ask "where was that restaurant we discussed last week" and it has a real chance of getting it right.
  • Hands-free Gmail. Search, summarise, star, archive or delete email by voice, without looking at the screen.
  • Daily Brief. Say "what's my daily brief" and Gemini reads out a spoken digest of your important email and calendar events for the day.
  • Spark tasks. For jobs that run longer, Gemini can hand them to Google's Spark agent to finish in the background.

Two of these cost money. Daily Brief needs Google AI Plus, which is S$6.98 a month in Singapore, and Spark needs the pricier Google AI Pro plan at S$28.99 a month. Personal Intelligence and hands-free Gmail work on the free tier once you connect your apps. If you are a full-time student, Google is giving one year of AI Plus away free, redeemable before 31 Dec 2026, so the paid features are worth testing while they cost nothing.

Set up Gemini Live in two minutes

The setup is short. The first step decides how much the assistant can actually do:

  1. Open the Gemini app on your phone, Android or iOS, and sign in with the Google account that holds your email and calendar.
  2. Tap your profile picture, open Settings and find Personal Intelligence. Connect the apps you are comfortable sharing. Gmail and Calendar are the useful ones. You can disconnect them later, and you should connect only what you are happy for the AI to read.
  3. Go back and tap the Live icon, the little waveform button, and start talking.

Typing works too, which is handy on the MRT when you do not want the whole cabin hearing your inbox. Google is rolling the new features out gradually, so if Daily Brief has not shown up on your account yet, update the app and check again over the next week or two.

Hands-free prompts that save real time

These work as voice commands in Live, and as typed prompts in the Gemini app if you prefer. Start with the safe actions until you have seen how accurate it is.

Scan school email (parent mode)

Are there any urgent emails from the kids' school today? Read me the important ones and skip the newsletters.

Morning triage before work

Summarise my unread email from this morning. Which three need a reply today, and what should each reply say?

Clear the promo pile

Archive every promotional email from Shopee, Lazada and FairPrice sent before this week. Do not touch anything about order delivery or refunds.

Daily Brief (Google AI Plus)

What's my daily brief?

No Daily Brief yet? Use this instead

Read my calendar for today and the three most important emails in my inbox, then tell me what I should prepare tonight.

Notice the prompts say archive, not delete. Email actions are real: archiving is reversible, while deleting sends mail to Trash for 30 days. Start with archive until you trust the results. For drafting replies and meeting notes, our office productivity guide covers the wider email workflow.

Where Gemini Live falls short

Now the honest part. Gemini Live only reaches Google apps. If your work email runs on Outlook or your life lives in WhatsApp, it cannot see any of that. It is most useful to people who already run their day inside Gmail and Google Calendar, which describes many Singapore households and small businesses, but far from everyone.

Privacy deserves a straight answer. When you connect Gmail, Google can read your messages to answer you, so connect only accounts you are comfortable with. I would think twice before linking a main banking or medical mailbox, and the Personal Intelligence settings let you disconnect anything in two taps.

One comparison for people who only know ChatGPT: ChatGPT voice is a strong general assistant, but it cannot reach inside your Gmail the way Gemini Live can, because Gemini lives inside your Google account. If you want an assistant that goes further and reaches non-Google tools too, our Hermes Agent setup guide shows the self-hosted route.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gemini Live free in Singapore?

Yes. The Gemini app is free and Gemini Live voice mode is included. Hands-free Gmail search and summaries, plus Personal Intelligence, work on the free tier once you connect your Google apps. Daily Brief needs Google AI Plus, and Spark background tasks need Google AI Pro.

How much does Google AI Plus cost in Singapore?

Google AI Plus is S$6.98 a month and Google AI Pro is S$28.99 a month, per Google's Singapore pricing page. Eligible full-time students can get one year of AI Plus free if they redeem before 31 Dec 2026.

Is the Gemini Daily Brief available in Singapore?

Google is rolling Daily Brief out in stages and US subscribers got it first. If it has not appeared in your Singapore account yet, update the Gemini app and check again in the coming weeks. The fallback prompt in this guide gives a similar spoken rundown on the free tier.

Can Gemini Live delete my emails by voice?

Yes. It can search, summarise, star, archive and delete messages. Treat deletion with care: deleted mail sits in Trash for 30 days before it is gone. Archive first until you are confident the actions are accurate.

Does Gemini read all my email once I connect Gmail?

Only the apps you explicitly connect in Personal Intelligence settings, and only when you ask something that needs them. You can disconnect any app at any time. Connect accounts you are comfortable with and leave sensitive mailboxes such as banking or medical out of it.

How is Gemini Live different from ChatGPT voice?

ChatGPT is the better all-round chatbot, but it cannot open your Gmail or calendar. Gemini Live can, because Google built it into your Google account. If your email and schedule live in Google apps, Gemini Live wins for hands-free day-to-day management.
