SingPass, ICA & MOM Paperwork, Explained by AI in Plain English

Most Singapore government letters are accurate, and also dense. A MOM in-principle approval, an ICA passport reminder, a CPF statement — each one is packed with conditions, deadlines and references you have to decode under pressure. The good news: every one of these services runs on SingPass, and the letters are largely predictable once you know the pattern. AI is excellent at translating this officialese into plain English, as long as you keep your personal details out of the prompt.

SingPass is your single login for more than 3,000 government e-services, from MyICA and myMOM Portal to CPF, IRAS and HDB. The Singpass app adds face verification and one-time passwords, so you never need to remember a separate password for each agency.

When a letter arrives, do not panic-read it. Copy the text into a chatbot and ask for a translation:

ICA handles citizenship, passports, long-term visit passes and the FIN used by foreigners. Most passport applications now happen on MyICA with Singpass: an adult passport is valid for 10 years, costs about S$70 when applied online, and is usually ready within a few working days. For long-term passes and other ICA services, the same pattern applies: name the service, ask for the checklist, and confirm the fee on the official site.

Work passes are handled by MOM, and the employer usually submits the application through myMOM Portal. The Employment Pass (EP) is for professionals: in 2026 the qualifying salary starts at S$5,600 a month (S$6,200 in financial services), and applicants also need at least 40 points on COMPASS, the points framework that looks at salary, qualifications, diversity and local hiring. The application fee is S$105 and issuing the pass costs S$225. The S Pass covers mid-level skilled workers, and the Work Permit covers manual and semi-skilled work. Approved workers check their digital pass on the SGWorkPass app.
