SkillsFuture AI Subscription: Which Free AI Tool to Pick

If you have only ever used the free version of ChatGPT, you know the wall. The model stops mid-answer, a message tells you that you have hit your limit, and the stronger models sit behind a paywall. On 16 September 2026, the government started paying for that wall to come down.

The Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) rolled out more than 200 AI courses that Wednesday, together with the SkillsFuture AI Subscription. Attend one eligible AI course and you get six months of a premium AI tool at no cost. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong opened the SkillsFuture Festival at the Lifelong Learning Institute the same morning, and his point was about cutting the confusion: "People should not need to know which agency runs which scheme before they can get help." The scheme was first announced in Budget 2026.

The value is not abstract. ChatGPT Plus runs about S$25 a month, Google AI Pro is S$28.99 a month in Singapore, Microsoft 365 Personal is listed at S$15.49 a month on Singtel's site, and MySkillsFuture describes the Manus option as 8,000 credits worth S$50 a month. Six months of any of the five works out to somewhere between S$90 and S$300 of software you would otherwise pay for yourself. CNA covered the launch here.

Before you get excited, one rule changes everything: you can claim this once, and you cannot swap after you choose.

The official criteria on MySkillsFuture are short:

• You are a Singapore Citizen.
• You are 18 or older.
• You have attended an eligible AI course that ends on 16 September 2026 or later.

Read the third point carefully. Attending is what triggers the reward, so the email arrives after your attendance is recorded, not after you pay the course fee. Booking a seat and skipping the class gets you nothing.

Two more rules are worth memorising. It is one subscription per person for the whole three-year programme, no matter how many eligible courses you sit through. And after the notification email lands, you have 60 days to submit the request form. Submit it, and the choice is locked.

To find courses, search MySkillsFuture and look for the "Free AI sub" label. SWDA says the catalogue carries more than 200 courses from about 30 training providers; when we checked, the filtered list was showing over 160. If you do not know where you stand, SWDA and SIT also built the AI Ready Quiz: 12 questions, about 15 minutes, and it sorts you into AI Aware, AI Literate or AI Fluent, then emails a profile with course suggestions. It is free and there is no certificate.

One design detail worth knowing: Otter.ai and the MiniMax tools are the meeting, audio and video side of the bundle, which is useful if your problem is transcribing conversations or producing clips rather than writing.

Since you cannot change your mind, decide from your actual week rather than from whichever launch video looked most impressive.

• More than half your day is email and documents? Google AI Pro, because the assistant works inside the apps you already open.
• Spreadsheets and slide decks for a living? Microsoft 365 Personal. Copilot inside Excel is the part you will use daily.
• You keep asking AI for research, comparisons or slide decks and the answer arrives half-finished? Manus AI. It works in steps and returns a deliverable.
• You mainly want to learn prompting and generate images? ChatGPT Plus.
• You genuinely do not know what you need yet? Singtel AI Pass, because it is built for sampling.

Two honest checks before you commit. First, take the free tier of your shortlisted tools for a spin this week if one exists, which is what the official page itself suggests. Second, ignore the retail price. The best option is the one you will open on a Tuesday night, not the one with the biggest list of features.

1. Log in to MySkillsFuture with SingPass and search for courses carrying the "Free AI sub" label.
2. Read the syllabus before you pay. Check the hours, whether it is hands-on or lecture-style, and whether the trainer is an SWDA-supported provider.
3. Enrol and attend. Attendance is what unlocks the subscription, so do not treat the classes as a formality.
4. Watch your inbox after the course ends. The notification email carries the request form.
5. Submit the form within 60 days and pick carefully. Once submitted, the tool cannot be changed.
6. Activate the subscription using the details in the outcome email, then set a calendar reminder for month five.

If paperwork is not your thing, SWDA also opened Connect by SWDA at the Lifelong Learning Institute, bringing career coaching and skills advice under one roof, and the SkillsFuture Festival runs until 28 October with more than 140 events island-wide. Employers get a new portal too: OurWorkforce, which replaces the SkillsFuture for Business site.

🔎 Hand a real job to Manus or any agent tool

Research what three competitors in Singapore charge for [product or service].
Use public pricing pages and list each source with the date you found it.
Then build a one-page comparison table and flag anything that looks like a hidden fee, a minimum contract, or a price that changed this year.

Course quality is uneven. Two hundred courses across 30 providers is a lot of variety, and some will be a trainer reading slides. Ask for the outline and the practical component before you commit your evenings. The subscription is a bonus, not a reason to sit through eight hours you will resent.

Check what happens at the end of the six months. These are commercial subscriptions, and some will ask for payment details at activation. Read the activation email properly, and if a card is required, diarise the cancellation date the day you sign up rather than in month six.

Know the limits of the bundle. Singtel AI Pass gives you six tools for three months and then one tool for the remaining three, so plan what you will keep. And remember the one-shot rule: if you are not ready to use the tool, there is no rush, because the programme runs for three years.

Finally, data discipline. Paid AI tools make it tempting to paste in everything: customer lists, quotations, staff records, medical letters. That is personal data belonging to other people, and PDPA applies to you as much as to a company. Strip names and identifiers before anything goes into a chat box.
