PSLE 2026 English Composition: How Parents Can Use AI to Coach Kids (Without Doing the Work for Them)

The PSLE English Paper 1 is worth 27.5% of the English grade, and the composition section asks Primary 6 students to write a story of about 120 words (picture-based) or a situational piece. The oral exam typically runs in August, with the written papers in late September and October.

Here is what markers actually look for: a clear story arc (beginning, problem, resolution), vivid sensory descriptions, correct grammar and spelling, and a conclusion that ties back to the theme. Schools discourage memorised model essays — originality and control of language score higher than fancy vocabulary used wrongly.

That is exactly where a well-guided AI can help: not to write the essay, but to coach the skills behind it.

There is a clear line between helping and cheating:

• Cheating: AI writes the full composition, and the child memorises or copies it.
• Coaching: AI generates ideas and sentence starters; the child does the actual writing and thinking.

Think of it like a swimming coach standing on the pool deck — the coach shouts technique tips, but the child swims the laps. Every step in this system keeps the child at the writing desk, with AI only supplying raw material to react to.

Here is a repeatable 4-step session you can run with your child, using any free AI chatbot (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini):

Step 1 — Idea brainstorm (5 min). Give the AI a typical PSLE picture prompt and ask for story ideas, not stories: "My child is in Primary 6. Here is a picture prompt: [describe the picture]. Give me 3 different story ideas with a clear problem and resolution, in one sentence each. Do not write the story."

Step 2 — Outline (5 min). "Pick the strongest idea and turn it into a 5-paragraph outline: beginning, build-up, problem, solution, ending. For each part, give one guiding question my child should answer."

Step 3 — Draft (15 min). Your child writes the composition by hand, using the outline. No AI here — this is the actual practice.

Step 4 — Review (5 min). Type the child's draft into the AI (no names or identifying details) and ask: "Act as a fair PSLE English marker. Give feedback on this composition: [draft]. List 2 things done well and 2 things to improve, with one concrete example for each. Do not rewrite the essay."

Total: 30 minutes, real writing practice, and the child owns every word.

• Keep the child in the driver seat. If the AI is writing more than 10% of the words, stop and dial it back.
• No personal data. Do not paste your child's full name, school, or address into AI tools. Use "my child" and generic descriptions.
• Check the school rules. Some schools ban AI tools for homework. Follow your school's policy — the techniques here are for home practice, not submitted work.
• Singapore English, not American slang. Ask the AI for Singapore-school English: no "gonna", no American spellings like "color". Keep it formal and clear.
• Timebox it. One 30-minute session, not an all-day AI marathon. Compositions are a craft; AI is just a sparring partner.

Many parents ask for AI-written model essays for the child to read. Used carefully, they can help — read one model essay together and discuss why the opening works, how the problem is introduced, and where the vocabulary is effective. Then close the essay and have the child write their own version on a fresh topic.

The goal is not to collect essays. The goal is to build the child's instinct for what makes a good story — and that instinct only develops through their own writing.
