What changed in the 2026 PSLE Math syllabus

The 2026 Primary Mathematics syllabus shifts weight toward multi-step problem solving. Basic algebra and equation-solving now appear at Primary 6, ratio is consolidated there, and average moves down from Secondary. Two topics, speed and the 8-point compass, are out. The exam now has Paper 1 worth 50% of the marks (multiple-choice and short answers) and Paper 2 for the rest, with heuristics-heavy questions. MOE's official PSLE page has the full picture.

What this means for parents: rote drilling matters less, and guided problem-solving matters more. That is exactly the kind of practice AI supports, if you use it the right way.

The coaching rule: AI asks, your child answers

The line between helping and cheating is simple. AI should ask questions that guide your child to the answer, never give the answer itself. The model is a good tutor:

Act as a PSLE Math tutor. My child is in Primary 6. Present this problem one step at a time: [paste problem]. After each step, ask ONE question that guides my child toward the next step. If my child answers correctly, move on. If not, give a smaller hint. Never show the full solution unless we ask for it after trying.

Work through the problem together on paper, drawing, labelling, thinking aloud. The thinking is the practice.

Bar models are still the star

MOE prescribes 12 heuristics for Primary Math, and the bar model, drawing a diagram, remains the most tested. When your child is stuck on a fraction, ratio or percentage word problem, the first move is a bar model, not algebra.

Create a PSLE-style word problem about [topic: fractions, ratio or percentage] using everyday Singapore contexts like hawker stalls, MRT rides or supermarket shopping. Then guide my child through drawing a bar model for it, one question at a time. Do not solve it for us.

Real contexts matter: PSLE questions often use local scenarios, so practising with them builds familiarity and confidence.

Learn from mistakes, not just make them

After a practice paper, the errors are the gold. Go through the wrong answers with AI to find the pattern:

One root cause fixed, like misreading "more than" as "times", is worth more than ten extra worksheets.

Drill the heuristics with variety

Students who can name the heuristic usually pick it faster. Ask AI to generate short drills that mix the common ones:

Create 5 short PSLE Math problems, each using a different heuristic from the MOE list (e.g. draw a diagram, guess and check, work backwards, before-after, systematic listing). After each problem, ask my child to name the heuristic before solving. Provide the answers separately for me.

Keep drills to 15 minutes a day. Short, frequent practice beats a long weekend cram.

The honest part

AI will happily solve the whole problem if you let it. Do not. If the chatbot writes the working, your child learns nothing, and the habit of copying is worse than any test score. Use AI only in the coaching role, check every problem it generates for syllabus fit, and never paste your child's full name or school into prompts.
